so i'm listening to 1971/08/14 and in the other one there is a jam that is SO CLOSE to being tighten up... it's around the midpoint i'd say. check it out for yourself and tell me if i'm lying.

I thought of it as the "almost-China Cat jam" in the Other One - so far as I know 10/31/71 was the only actual Tighten Up that happened in '71.

I've mentioned these before, but for other unique jams, check out the "almost-Spanish Jam' in the 7/25/72 Other One:

- and the "Bobby McGee/Bid You Goodnight jam" at the end of the 3/22/72 Caution. No actual titles for these, I just called them what they reminded me of.

what i'm talking about is around 5:20 in the "jam" track on this source:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd71-08-14.sbd.ladner.21268.sbeok.shnf

the chords are almost exactly the same, and the rhythms ARE exactly the same. tighten up jam is a repeated four bar-long Amaj7 | Amaj7 | Bmin7 | Bmin7, whereas this is just A | A | Bmin | Bmin

i think we must be thinking of two different parts to this jam, which makes sense - it's long and juicy.

The parts we're listening to are only 30 seconds apart!

At about 4:10 into the jam, Garcia starts a new theme with a "here we go" feeling - the others pick it up right away, like they already recognize it -
At 4:46 he starts a solo that sounds exactly like a rearranged China Cat solo -
Then about 5:18 they go into the little Tighten Up section - it doesn't last long, but Garcia's solo has two distinct "parts" before it ends -
By 6:10 Phil takes over for a short bit, then they dissipate into regular Other One jamming again.

In this jam they're morphing from one theme to another very quickly - yet it sounds like they're playing some song they all know....
